Diabetes – no longer a disease particular to developed societies
China and India have the highest number of patients with diabetes worldwide
Metabolic diseases extend rapidly all over the world and the number of patients grows from one year to another, according to the statistics, said in an interview for Medica Academica magazine PhD. M.D. Dan Mircea Cheța, Director of the Research and Development Department of „Nicolae Paulescu” Institute for Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases.
Dr. Cheța comments upon the recent epidemiologic information that place India and China on the first place worldwide regarding the number of patients with diabetes, as well as upon the situation in Romania where aproximately one milion people are diagnosed with diabetes. He warned that specialists consider obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetes could seriously threaten the human species unless taken seriously. Dr. Cheța also pointed to the problems the scientific research faces in Romania because of the lack of funding.
